Punta Arenas: through Air, Land & Sea to Antarctica

Itinerary: 7 Days / 6 Nights

    We invite you to join the most fascinating Antarctic Cruise, which is also a worldwide exclusivity: the only Antarctic flight-cruise in history. You will be able to get to the Antarctic in approximately three hours in direct flight from the city of Punta Arenas in Chile, avoiding a journey of 5 Days (2.5 to get there and 2.5 to return) through the stormy waters of the Drake Sea. You will visit the most beautiful scenic places and the largest concentration of fauna in this bright continent.

DAY 1: PUNTA ARENAS

  • Arrival at the city of Punta Arenas where you will be met by Antarctica XXI Staff, to be later transferred to the selected hotel. During the afternoon, before dinner, you will receive instructions in relation with the norms that should be followed in Antarctica and about the procedures of embarkation and disembarkation. Later, you will enjoy our welcome dinner at the José Nogueira Hotel, a centenary French style mansion, where you will have the chance to meet your expedition mates.

DAY 2: PUNTA ARENAS / KING GEORGE ISLAND

  • Our Antarctic adventure begins. Flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island ( South Shetland Islands ). The flight takes a little over three hours. Upon arrival we will be able to tour around the area where the "Presidente Eduardo Frei M." Chilean Base and "Bellinghausen" Russian Base are located. We will gather at the beach on Fildes Bay for embarkation, by Zodiac boats, to M/V "Grigoriy Mikheev".

DAY 3 to 6: SOUTH SHETLAND ISLANDS & PENINSULA

  • As we cruise between the South Shetland Islands and the Peninsula , sailing along ice-filled fjords and between spectacular icebergs, we will enjoy the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and whales. Our Journey toward the south may include visits to some of the most magnificent spots in the white continent such as: Hannah Point , Port Lockroy, Petermann Island , Paradise Bay , Cuverville and Deception Islands amongst others. Our adventure will be full, with daily landings and cruises in zodiacs boats, selected lectures and an enjoyable time on board.

DAY 7: KING GEORGE ISLAND - PUNTA ARENAS

  • Return to King George Island where we will disembark, in Zodiac boats, at Fildes Bay by "Presidente Eduardo Frei M." Chilean Base, and head to the "Teniente Marsh" aerodrome to take the flight back to Punta Arenas . End of program upon arrival at the Airport in Punta Arenas.
    NOTE: Please use this itinerary only as a guide, because the exact route and program may vary according to the weather conditions, the amount of ice on the zone, or the presence of wildlife.

Punta Arenas: Fly to Antarctica for the Night

Itinerary: 2 Days / 1 Night

There is no other place in the world as amazing as Antarctica. This continent is almost completely covered by ice, a desert of water. Covering an area of around 7,000,000 km², Antarctica is the second smallest continent after Australia. It is also the windiest, coldest and least populated of the planet. The search for the Antarctic Continent was one of the last great adventures during exploration times. We invite you to explore and feel the Antarctic Experience, during two days and one night. The only place in the world reserved for study and worldwide scientific development.

DAY 1: PUNTA ARENAS - KING GEORGE ISLAND

  • Transfer to the airport in Punta Arenas to take the airplane to the Antartica, Frei Base. First of all, the pilot will check the weather conditions and if they are favourable we will leave heading south towards Antarctica, our destination. During the flight, we will be crossing the Magellan Straight and continue over Tierra del Fuego, Darwin Mountains and its glaciers. Only islands will compose the landscape until we reach Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn) and the last rocks of the American continent. After a pleasant flight of three and a half hour we will get to the Antarctic’s airport of Frei Base at King George Island. After the arrival, we will visit the establishments of Villa Las Estrellas (Las Estrellas Village), first site to inhabited by civilians, and the Meteorological Centre. Then we will visit the Sea Lion colony in the Drake Sea on a hike across the runway towards the beach. Enjoy lunch or a snack depending on the place and time of arrival. Then we will take a short walk to the Chinese Station to observe Marine Birds, Penguins and Weddell Seals. Also we will walk through an isthmus to Ardley Island, where Papua Penguin colonies live. After a marvellous day overnight at the expeditions refuge.

DAY 2: KING GEORGE ISLAND - PUNTA ARENAS

  • Breakfast in the morning. We will visit different Antarctic Research Stations and we will be able to speak to the investigators . During the day some time is left to see places of attractions and prepare our return to Punta Arenas.
