Our Chilepros Travel Social Event was held full of enjoyment on such a beautiful day. The event was dedicated to Chile's Pacific Islands such as Easter Island. People were very happy with the variety of seafood, empanadas and ceviche, and exquisite Chilean wine. In addition, there were the Chilean Huasos' (Cowboys) performing live traditional music. Moreover, our local media joined us which shows how successful the event was.

September 25th, 2007, over 600 people visited the event hall decorated with tasteful colors. A couple of Lamas, camels form Andes Mountain, greeted people. It was a great opportunity to taste wines from more than 30 Chilean wineries and meet people with similar interests.

Thirsty Thursday got off (July 12th) with Salud Chile event at the VanDusen Botanical Garden. About 250 people gathered to celebrated a beautiful evening with sensational weather conditions, great wine (Casa del Bosque, Ventisquero, Carmen and Trio), chilean-inspired tidbits such as Pollo Escab Echado (chicken ceviche-style), Pork Empanaditas and Alcachofas Rellenas con Atun (artichokes stuffed with tuna and celery salad) and the eternal sounds of Andean music played by the famous Huasos Chileno's, the Galdames Brothers.

The event was sponsored by the Consulate of Chile who also donated the amazing wine selection. Thanks to Consulate, Maria Eliana Cuevas, who had a brilliant idea of donating Chilean seeds to the garden, through the University of Chile, it allowed us to inaugurate the Chilean seeds planted in the Chilean garden.

Chilepros Travel was there, to promote Chile and its neighboring countries with great success. The President, Barbara Kechington concludes the event with these words: “The interest to visit South American tourism destinations has increased in the past years. The outstanding quality of the service continues to increase. We continue to receive great feed back. Today was an amazing opportunity to experience everyones reaction." Meanwhile we gave away our catalog, along with information about upcoming event on August 21, 2007.

We celebrated among the summer mood that enjoyed this social blowout, as part of the Garden's 30th anniversary, which started three years ago. Many people from Chile and other Latin countries made their appearance and we are happy to report this.

Foreign tourists to Chile up 16.2% in first half of 2006

According the Sernatur, Chile's National Tourism Service Office, foreign tourists to Chile were up 16.2% in the first half of 2006 over the same period of time in 2005.

Last year figures show that 2.207.082 foreign tourists arrived in Chile with an average expenditure of 503 US dollars. Statistics show that only the number of tourists from Germany declined (5.6%), with a significant increase among those coming from South America, 16.7%.

Tourists from Argentina increased 10.8%; from Brazil, 11.3%; Peru 16.4% and Bolivia a whooping 58.5% basically following the elimination of the need of a passport to visit Chile. Colombians also registered a significant increase of 29.7% in 2005.

The increase in the number of visitors from North America was below average, 13.9% with Canada registering the highest growth 22.8% compared to Mexico’s 13.6% and United States 12.3%.

Tourism numbers from Europe were quite erratic. The overall increase was 9% with Britain 18.9%; Spain 10.9%; France 9.3%; Italy 8.2% and Germany declining 5.6%.

Among the group of European visitors with lesser impact in numbers, Holland comes ahead with a 20.1% increase followed by Sweden with 6.4%. The 2005 Chilean tourism report points out the growing importance of Oceania with Australia leading with an overall increase of 17.5%.

Chile and Argentina Create Biosphere Reserve in Patagonia

Chile and Argentina have teamed up to create a 4.7 million hectares of land into a biosphere reserve:

The Andean-North Patagonian Biosphere Reserve is the fruit of conservation efforts in both countries. Nahuel Huapi park ranger Juan Salguero said he foresees “a shared policy of endangered species protection and hunting and fishing, as well as treaties on pest protection and forest fires.”

The vast forestland may also be sanctified a “world nature reserve” by the United Nations Education Science and Culture Organization (UNESCO) in March 2007. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves already includes eight sites in Chile, out of 482 worldwide. Designated reserve sites receive aid in conservation, development, research, monitoring and education.

Good news for travellers heading to Chile with laptops in their luggage. Executives at Hewlett Packard have stated Chile currently leads laptop penetration in Latin America.

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)Chile is the Latin American country with the highest penetration of laptops in the region, with an index of 24%, compared to the 12% regional average, local newspaper Estrategia quoted an executive at Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) as saying.

Unique Private Park Getaway in Southern Chile

The Charlotte Observer has a great article about an American owned private park being on the the most popular unique getaways in Southern Chile:

Former American clothing tycoon-turned-environmentalist Douglas Tompkins moved here 15 years ago and created what's billed as the biggest privately owned park in the world with the money from selling shares in North Face and Esprit, the clothing companies he founded. He named the park Pumalin after the pumas that live in the area.

Cruise Vessels Calling in Chile Up 20%

According to MercoPress, a record number of cruiseships visited Chile ports in 2005.

The number of luxury line cruise ships calling at Chilean ports grew to a record breaking 120 in 2005, up by 20% over the previous season. Industry leaders say that even more cruise ships are on the horizon.

Passengers who visit Chile aboard the cruisers spend on average 100 US dollars in each port, and the packaged tourism deals sold to the passengers have increased by 30% the past several years.

As the summer closes in on the slopes of North American ski resorts, skiers are heading south for the summer to check out the great ski destinations in Chile:

PORTILLO, Chile — I strap on my skis and stare anxiously at the array of chairlifts heading off into the distance. I haven’t skied in five years and wonder whether, at age 44, I can still muster the skill to whoosh down a mountain.

I have come to a good place to find out — two, in fact: the Chilean resorts of Portillo and Valle Nevado.

Hike The Entire Length of Chile: Sendero de Chile

All Southern Chile has a great review of the Sendero de Chile, a hiking trail that runs the entire length of Chile.

Well, it's just a trail. Granted, the Sendero de Chile is a very long trail by most standards. It covers the entire length of Chile, from the northern border to the very tip of South America. It includes a total of more than 9,700 km. of trekking paths. The main trail was designed to better connect the many existing trail loops of the National Parks and Natural Reserves systems that already existed in Chile, and help protect the environment while helping to promote tourism in rural areas of Chile.

Easter Island to Gain Autonomy

OhMyNews.com is reporting that Easter Island will gain administrative autonomy from Chile.

Chile is currently divided into 13 regions and includes part of Antarctica. The regions are composed of 51 provinces, which in turn are made up of 324 municipalities. Easter Island is a province and at the same time a municipality of the fifth Region of Chile, named Valparaiso.

All provinces are administratively dependent on the regions in all respects, especially so in regard to development, which is strongly involved with the country's distribution of wealth.

Chile president-elect Michelle Bachelet, a Socialist who will be the country's first female leader, vowed on Monday to shrink the gap between rich and poor that persists in the South American nation despite lower poverty and a thriving economy.
Bachelet, from Chile's ruling center-left coalition, won 53 percent of ballots cast in Sunday's election while opposition candidate Sebastian Pinera took 47 percent, the government Electoral Service said.

Michelle Bachelet wants to keep the economy vibrant. This is wonderful news as the tourism industry has been active and thriving.

Bachelet, 54, takes over an economy that is expanding for a seventh year, benefiting from a surge in prices of copper, Chile's No. 1 export. A member of the coalition that has governed since former dictator Augusto Pinochet fell from power in 1990, Bachelet also inherits a record budget surplus, an inflation rate less than a third the level of neighboring Argentina and declining unemployment.

``I receive a country that's energized, prosperous, optimistic,'' Bachelet said in a victory speech from a stage in downtown Santiago last night. ``After decades of economic ups and downs, we built a vibrant economy that many want to imitate. We will continue on that road.''

Chilepros Travel has encountered an amazing opportunity to participate in this years Chilean Wine Festival 2005 on Sept 22nd, 2005.

The NEW Rocky Mountaineer's Vancouver location on Cottrell Street is beautiful. This loft like station was perfect. An exquisite selection of Chilean Wines combined with Chilean Huasos (Cowboy) created the perfect setting.

Proceeds benefit the Roundhouse Youth Programs.
