Punta Arenas: Fly to Antarctica for the Night

Itinerary: 2 Days / 1 Night

There is no other place in the world as amazing as Antarctica. This continent is almost completely covered by ice, a desert of water. Covering an area of around 7,000,000 km², Antarctica is the second smallest continent after Australia. It is also the windiest, coldest and least populated of the planet. The search for the Antarctic Continent was one of the last great adventures during exploration times. We invite you to explore and feel the Antarctic Experience, during two days and one night. The only place in the world reserved for study and worldwide scientific development.

DAY 1: PUNTA ARENAS - REY JORGE ISLAND

  • Transfer to the airport in Punta Arenas to take the airplane to the Antartica, Frei Base. First of all, the pilot will check the weather conditions and if they are favourable we will leave heading south towards Antarctica, our destination. During the flight, we will be crossing the Magellan Straight and continue over Tierra del Fuego, Darwin Mountains and its glaciers. Only islands will compose the landscape until we reach Cabo de Hornos (Cape Horn) and the last rocks of the American continent. After a pleasant flight of three and a half hour we will get to the Antarctic’s airport of Frei Base at King George Island. After the arrival, we will visit the establishments of Villa Las Estrellas (Las Estrellas Village), first site to inhabited by civilians, and the Meteorological Centre. Then we will visit the Sea Lion colony in the Drake Sea on a hike across the runway towards the beach. Enjoy lunch or a snack depending on the place and time of arrival. Then we will take a short walk to the Chinese Station to observe Marine Birds, Penguins and Weddell Seals. Also we will walk through an isthmus to Ardley Island, where Papua Penguin colonies live. After a marvellous day overnight at the expeditions refuge.
