Group to Chile: Atacama, Lakes & Patagonia


Itinerary: 12 Days / 11 Nights

Departs: March 9-23, 2009

DAY 1: SANTIAGO

  • (Dinner)
  • Reception at Santiago airport and transfer to the Hotel. Afternoon tour around Santiago, visiting the city’s most outstanding attractions, including a walking tour downtown visiting the “Plaza de Armas”, the Cathedral, Ahumada Boulevard and the Government Palace “La Moneda”. Then, by vehicle, visit the main avenues of old Santiago, crossing the bohemian neighborhood of Bellavista and drive up San Cristobal Hill, for a magnificent panoramic view of the city and the Andes Mountain Range. After this a visit to the modern part of Santiago, including its elegant neighborhoods, shopping and financial centers. This tour ends at the artisan village of “Los Graneros del Alba”, where artisans can be seen at work, having plenty of time to walk around or do some shopping. Return to the hotel.
    Dinner and overnight at the selected Hotel.

DAY 2: SANTIAGO / CALAMA / SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel and transfer to the airport in time for the flight to Calama. Reception at Calama airport and transfer to the village of San Pedro de Atacama through the Domekyo mountain range and the Salt Mountain range. In the afternoon, visit Moon Valley to admire the spectacular sunset reflected on this wonderful landscape – nature’s own light show. Return to the hotel. Dinner in a local restaurant included. Overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 3: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / SALAR DE ATACAMA / TOCONAO / SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. In the morning, visit the archeological museum of Padre Le Peige which has an important anthropological collection of the atacamenian culture. Then continue to the Indian fortress of Quitor, where Atacamenian families live and work the land and also the ruins of Tulor, an ancient abandoned village more than 3000 years old. In the afternoon visit the village of Toconao, famous for its volcanic Liparite stone and travel on to the Atacama Salt Lake and the Chaxa lagoon after a short walk in the Jeri valley. In the Chaxa lagoon observe the native pink flamingoes. Return to San Pedro de Atacama. Dinner included in a local restaurant. Overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 4: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / EL TATIO GEISERS (Machuca Town) / SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Early departure from the hotel (4.00 AM) to the Geysers del Tatio. Breakfast box in the Geysers before a gentle guided walk around the geothermal field with observation of the natural phenomenon of the steam columns which are viewed at their best as the sun rises over the Andes Mountains. Then visit Machuca, a little and interest town where it is mix the aymara tradition. Return to San Pedro with spectacular views of the Torcopuri y Sairecabur volcanoes. On returning to San Pedro, the rest of the day is at leisure. We suggest visiting the market in San Pedro. Dinner included in a local restaurant. Overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 5: SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA / CALAMA / SANTIAGO / PUERTO MONTT / PUERTO VARAS

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. Transfer to the airport of Calama for the flight to Santiago with connection to Puerto Montt. On arrival in Puerto Montt, reception and transfer to the hotel in Puerto Varas. Dinner & Overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 6: PUERTO VARAS / PUERTO MONTT / FRUTILLAR / PETROHUE / PUERTO VARAS

  • (Breakfast - Lunch)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. Departure from the hotel to visit the town of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt. First visit the streets and avenues adorned with rose bushes and the Philippi Hill with wonderful views of Lake Llanquihue and the Osorno Volcano. Continue to Puerto Montt and the fishermen village of Angelmó with it’s wonderful selection of arts and crafts and then back to Puerto Varas. In the afternoon visit Frutillar, on the way admiring the majestic Osorno Volcano and Llanquihue Lake. The tour includes a visit to upper and lower Frutillar and its church. Continue the visit along the southern shore of lake Llanquihue admiring the views of the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes with a stop at the falls of Petrohue River (Lunch included). We continue to the small port of Petrohue on the shores of All Saint’s Lake. In the afternoon return to Puerto Varas. Overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 7: PUERTO VARAS / CHILOE ISLAND / PUERTO VARAS

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Departure from Puerto Varas southwards towards Chiloe Island. This day we will cover around 450 kilometers.
    In the community of Pargua we will embark a ferry that will cross the Chacao channel in a 45 minute ride. We will disembark in Chacao where we will see the first signs of the classic island architecture called “chilota”. We will visit the village of Quemchi and the area of Aucar where the main highlight is its pedestrian bridge of almost 560 meters long (1700 feet) fuilt in wood that connects this area with a picturesque cemetery located in a small island. We will continue to Colo where a visit to the most traditional church of the island. All the churches in Chiloe Island have been declared world heritage and they were all constructed as from the XVI century. In all the different small villages that will be visited the local classic architecture will be seen with its typical wooden roofs made out of local vegetation. The circuit includes also the city of Castro where the most interesting aspect is their typicall houses constructed on plots over the sea called “palafitos” and the city’s traditional craft market where the woollen products are among their most popular. By the end of the afternoon, return to Puerto Varas Dinner and lodging in selected Hotel.

DAY 8: PUERTO VARAS / PUNTA ARENAS / PUERTO NATALES

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel before departing for the airport of Puerto Montt for a flight to Punta Arenas. In Punta Arenas, reception at the airport and transfer to the bus station for a regular bus to Puerto Natales. Reception at the bus station and transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 9: PUERTO NATALES / BALMACEDA & SERRANO GLACIERS / PUERTO NATALES

  • (Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. Full day excursion with lunch included. Early in the morning sail from Puerto Natales visiting the beautiful Ultima Esperanza Fjord and after a 3-hour navigation arrival to the thousand-year-old glacier of Mount Balmaceda, habitat of cormorants and sea lions. At the end of the fjord disembark and walk approximately 1 kilometer (3/4 mile) on a path through the middle of a wonderful native forest to the foot of the Glacier Serrano and from there admire this huge natural wonder. Stay here for a couple of hours before returning to Puerto Natales in the afternoon.
    Dinner and overnight in the selected Hotel.

DAY 10: PUERTO NATALES / TORRES DEL PAINE / PUERTO NATALES

  • (Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. Full day excursion with lunch included, visiting Torres del Paine National Park. Departure from Puerto Natales. The journey continues through steppes and Patagonia scrub, full of abundant wild life and herds of sheep, up to Torres del Paine National Park. In the park, a large variety of native fauna especially large herds of guanacos can be observed. Visit the Salto Grande of the Pehoe River, with the impressive mountain massif of Torres del Paine in the background. Then visit to Lake Pehoe, Lake Grey and Grey Glacier. Return to Puerto Natales in the evening.
    Dinner and overnight selected Hotel.

DAY 11: PUERTO NATALES / PUNTA ARENAS / SANTIAGO

  • (Breakfast - Dinner)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. Transfer to the bus station to board a regular service bus that goes to Punta Arenas airport to board the flight to Santiago. In Santiago reception at the airport and transfer to the hotel. Dinner and overnight selected Hotel.

DAY 12: SANTIAGO

  • (Breakfast)
  • Breakfast in the hotel. At the appropriate time, transfer to the airport to board onward flight.
